Goldfinch ~ Carduelis carduelis

Not selected for Google Earth or Google Maps [?]

A highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain.

Hello Nick

excellent capture of this lovely colorful bird, like it

at first I thought you had the wrong name for it , in the Netherlands we name this bird Goldfinch .. but I just found out in England it is known as Bullfinch,:) ,

warm greetings Karin

Nick Weall on April 4, 2013

K@rin ~ I have not yet found a Bullfinch to take a shot of Karin but would love to. How funny that you call a Bullfinch a Goldfinch ~ just to make life even more confusing I guess :))) Thanks for your kind compliment they are extremely hard to capture I find, but I have a pair visiting every day and sooner or later I hope to get an even better shot of them both ~ Warm winter wishes ~ nick

William Stephens on April 5, 2013

Nice goldfinch shot Nick - I have six or so in the garden, as long as i keep putting out the Niger seed! I had tree sparrows last year but not a sign of them this year. i'm getting a few Lesser Redpoll this winter though, do you have them as well? Anyway, LIKE 9! Cheers, william

Nick Weall on April 5, 2013

William Stephens, ~ Lucky you William to have half a dozen of them ~ I have never seen a Lessor Redpoll, but no doubt will next week :~) They do not frequent the southern parts of England so much, but the do look rather handsome ~ Thanks for the like. Enjoy your weekend ~ Cheers ~ nick
