I don't know why the chimney was there, maybe a local historian could help. Possibly the chimney was part of a pump house, used to pump water for irrigation, or maybe it was part of a system for drying out reeds for further use.

Hi, This brick built chimney is is known as Black Mill and is the chimney for an old dissused steam pump. The old derelict pump house is at the base of the chimney and there is a small victorian cast iron sluice gate and an iron pinion wheel with oak teeth still fairly intact. The pump would have been used for marsh drainage and probably replaced an earlier wind pump.
