Egdon Heath is not an exact geographical location, but a fictitious creation of Thomas Hardy that distilled elements of the landscape that was characteristic of the heathlands of Dorset. Many such areas were still, in Hardy's time, common lands where the inhabitants could gather fuel, graze animals and hunt wildlife. I too have read The Return of the Native, but that was 50 years ago when I was at school and had to answer questions about the book in examinations. Not the best circumstances in which to enjoy literature, but I still have a vivid image of the Reddleman in my mind, Something to do with my own dark complexion perhaps!
