Palo United Methodist Church - Palo, Iowa

Palo United Methodist is one of the oldest buildings in the survey. Built in 1870 the building has had one major addition since; in 1948 a basement was added by elevating the original building and excavating space beneath it.

The Flood of 2008 only affected the basement. 6.5 feet of water filled the basement, but did not rise high enough to come into contact with the floor boards of the first floor. The basement and its contents (kitchen, restrooms, Sunday school) were destroyed, but the sanctuary was untouched. The church received help from a company from Alabama that came and cleaned out the building by blowing hot air inside to dry it. During post-flood renovations, the basement was stripped to the foundation. After patching and sealing the foundation, the basement was restored with new restrooms, kitchen, etc. The layout in the basement is similar to what it was pre-flood. According to Pastor John Howardson, the building is now better than before. http://www.preservationiowa.org/initiatives/sacredItem.php?id_num=19
