The so-called "Verkehrsturm" (Traffic tower) coined in 1924 the image of the Potsdamer Platz. Due to the large volume of traffic, Siemens was commissioned by the Berlin city government to set up in the middle of this square, the first traffic lights in Berlin. It displayed three horizontal lights (not vertically, as is usual nowadays). The construction of the underground train ended the lifecycle of this traffic tower. It was dismantled in 1937 but since 1997 a replica of the tower now stands on the site.
