Does anybody know what that sign says?...I assume it is no entry etc...but it would be interesting to know what it says

Yes, it says:

"This Office is Permanently Closed. Entry into Canada at this point is Illegal. The nearest port of entry is Rivier de Chute - 8A.M.-12A.M. Andover - 24 hours"

The right side of the sign says the same thing in French

Thanks.....the Rivier de Chute port of entry is a pretty quiet one in comparison to the Andover/Fort Fairfield mother in law is from Andover and I've crossed at Rivier and Andover (and that golf course port of entry.

Yes, but I think the hours posted on the sign are wrong. I think Rivier de Chute is open 8am-4pm. Strangely, the sign is hand painted. There is a similar sign at Listerville, leading me to believe both stations were closed at the same time.

As you've probably gathered, I find it interesting that certain places used to be legal border crossings, but no longer are.

There are quite a few, as you know, along the NY/QC, NY/VT and NB/ME borders. I'm not aware of any closed ones along the ME/QC border. The NY/QC border has a number of road crossings that are open but without any port of entry facilities etc (on the Indian Reservation).

I have compiled a list of places that at one time had at one time had a US and/or Canadian border inspection station. Some can still be used under certain conditions. Let me know if you have any questions about any of these.

Some of these border crossings have now been uploaded to Google Street View especially in ME. And the highway in NY east of Rouses Point that parallels the border and now Derby Line VT is on Street View

Yes, they don't usually bother with small barricaded roads like this one, but they did go down Knoxford Road to the border at Listerville. That's a new add because I was just looking there a couple weeks ago and it wasn't there.
