Hi Anita do you have any idea of what was the use of this (former) building?? cheers Peter

A.SKINNER, on April 3, 2008, said:

Hi Peter, the building was called a pin fold, they were built around the 16th and 17th centuries to hold any stray animals. To release your animals you had to pay a fee. The man in charge was called a Pinder. Stock men could also keep their animals in the pin fold over night for a small amount of money. I hope this information helps you....Kind regards Anita

oh yes thank you Anita very much so. I have seen similar formed shape but only as a marking in the terrain just like a little earth rim in a Danish heathland. Round with a narrow opening. I didn't know what it could be, but it makes much sense to draw parallels to your explanation! Cheers Peter

Hi Peter, the markings in the earth could also be that of iron age round huts, without close inspection we cannot assume it to be the same. There is a good possibility that it is a pinfold. Here in England there are also square and irregular ones too...Kind regards Anita.

I'm happy that you found it interesting Marilyn. It's amazing something of such simple structure can have such a historical background...Regards Anita

Hi Anita you seem to know more about this interesting subject than most! highly interesting :) I can tell you after flurry of snow that enhanced the countours of the landscape by layering itself next to every little lee creating earth structure I could point out old Iron-age fields long time abandoned in a heathland. Wonder if I can find the photo that documented it. Thanks for bringing up old memories of 'reading' the past. Yours Peter

I would be very interested to see a photo of these earth works. When we are out walking in the open countryside I love detecting these structures. These finds tell us so much about our past. Regards Anita

Dear Anita and Peter,

This is a perfect image of a perfectly formed fold, Anita.

I thought Peter may be interested to see other examples so I have uploaded some images from Malham.

Kind regards toyou both,

Ian
