House of Blackheads – The Melngalvju. Originally built in 1344, this resurrected ghost is another reminder of Riga's still-healing historical scars. Ironically located in the Town Hall Square by the Museum of Occupations, the original House of Blackheads was destroyed during the war in 1941 and buried by the Soviets in 1948. It was rebuilt in 2001 with careful attention to its original structure and exterior ornamentation to commemorate the city's 800th anniversary. Originally owned by a merchant guild, in its current reincarnation the House of Blackheads serves as a museum and sometimes concert hall.
See a lot of interesting photos from beautiful Riga in this Photo Gallery with detailed descriptions to each photo of the most beautiful areas, monuments, buildings and other attractions.

It is truly a beautiful city, and I appreciate what it must have taken to rebuild the "House" after so much destruction. Americans like myself, sometimes find it hard to imagine a city that is 800 years old when the architecture of most of our major cities is under 100 years old.

Hi again Hank!
I have been in USA once (New York). Really interesting city but as you mention your country does not have an old architecture like in Riga. The most impressive city I have ever visited is ROME in Italy. It’s like a big museum!
I am planning to visit USA this summer. The foreign exchange value (NOK–USD) is good for us in Norway (the lowest ever) so it is a good opportunity to visit your beautiful and very interesting country.
