The Canal was only Drained in between the Coffer Dams these were constructed from scaffold poles and a waterproof fabric. The construction of the bridge took several months and the canal needed to be drained to construct the stronger foundations. The piles and Shuttering were about 6 meters/20 ft long.
Good info, Thanks George. Credit to you for documenting all these things, stuff that I'm sure many people at the time thought were irrelevant but that have real historical interest - especially the buildings now long gone.
