Tulpenbollen worden geplant in Oktober en komen in April in bloei. Het kweken van nieuwe bollen gebeurt door de bloeiende tulp te koppen, d.w.z. dat de bloem van de stengel wordt afgesneden zodat in de grond nieuwe bollen groeien die medio juni worden gerooid.

De tulp kent vele soorten in allerlei kleuren en variaties. Nederland is beroemd om zijn tulpen en is een van de grootste exportlanden van tulpen en tulpenbollen.
