This was seven exposures (i.e. ±3 stops)hand held. ISO 400 is really not pushing at all with the D300 so I often use that. The key issue in most light is not the exposure (though VR helps on Nikon lenses) but the time between exposures. I set the camera to the highest setting (6 fps?) and fire off the whole lot. I focus through the lens on trying to minimise camera movement between shots but the latest version of Photomatix Pro helps considerably as their alignment algorithms seem to have improved. If I don't get proper alignment i reduce to three frames ±2 EV - My Nikon won't do more than 1 stop interval so that is a limiting factor.
