Healesville sanctuary. A gravel path forms a twisty loop around more than 30 acres of pristine forest that displays 200-odd species of the Australian fauna. You can walk through most of the exhibits and literally share the same patch of ground or air with the animals, rather than be looking into a cage from the outside.

The sanctuary’s koala colony consists of eight specimens that live in artificially arranged eucalypt trees, isolated into three sectors to ensure the males do not get involved in territory wars.
