This was taken on a rather gloomy day in late September 2006. The church dates from the early 14th century. The land in this part of the county of Somerset is notoriously unstable and plainly the tower started leaning not long after construction started. Look carefully at the top of the tower and you can see that the builders tried hard to compensate albeit not entirely successfully. From the photographer's perspective there are real difficulties - what does one take as a reference point? The land rises very slightly to the right it seems. The white house at left seems to be true as does the church gate next to it. The wall the gate is fixed to is not vertical, creating yet more doubt. According to the church's website, if a plumbline were to be lowered from the north side of the tower (to the left in this image) it would touch the ground about 3 feet (1 metre) away from the north wall. Undecided? Then pay a visit. It'll be worth the trouble!
