Santa Sofia (or Hagia Sophia) was Christian church a few century ago. I can't understand why it is not today.

Because Mehmet I had a "divine" intervention. He was not going to be satisfied until Constantinople was a Muslim city. The sad fact of the whole issue is that the Byzantine Empire was in a weakened state from all the looting conducted by the Catholic crusaders during the crusades.
