Pelion, Afyssos

Pelion or Pilion is a mountain in Central-East Greece, at the district of Magnessia, native land of Centaurus and Achilleas, son of Peleas, from whom the mountain take its name (mythology). The mountain occupies all the chersonissos of Magnessia, from Pagassitikos bay to the Aegean sea, with many pittoresque villages, built near the magnificent beaches on both sides of the mountain.

All the area was admired by greek and foreign painters as Giorgio de Cirico, Theofilos, Gounaropoulos, Iakovidis, as well as greek actors (Elli Lambeti, Lakis Lazopoulos etc.) and poets (Drossinis etc.) had their summer residence there.

The mountain offers high quality tourism all the year, Volos the capital of Magnesia is situated at the proximity of the mountain. At the top, Chania offers ski resort during the winter. Nearby Volos, prehistoric sites are found Sesclon, Microthibes and Dimini. In Agchialos, hellenistic and roman ruins are found at the excavations.

The mountain is known also for the delicious apples from Zagora, sweets from fruits and the famous raki of the area.

Drivers must go slowly to admire the nature of the mountain.
