Goldfinch ~ Carduelis carduelis

Not selected for Google Earth or Google Maps [?]

A highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain. From :

Beautifully captured photo Nick ! This one looks as though he/she was posing for you, but I'm sure the reality was not so leisurely! Definitely my favorite of an excellent series.
All the best, Mark

MarkWNS ~ Thanks Mark ~ I'm glad you have enjoyed the series ~ it has been a day of wind, heavy showers and patches of sun for us ~ I was sitting in the back of my Landrover with the rear upper door open waiting for the action ~ which was a very long time coming ~ All the very best to you ~ nick

Steve Drury ~ I've been seeing a beautiful Chaffinch feeding at one the feeders whilst working the past couple of weeks and I'd read somewhere that it is unusual to see them at bird feeders as they are primarily a ground feeder ~ so that is what I was after yesterday morning ~ but it was a bonus to see my favourite finches dropping in too ~ Thanks for the like and enjoy your Sunday ~ it is very hazy down here ~ All the best ~ nick

I managed to get a couple of pictures of a goldfinch a few weeks back but when I transferred them to the computer they were disappointing. Not as sharp as yours. Like it. Very well done. Best wishes, Rosa.

♦Rosa♦ ~ I think that they are so beautiful Rosa ~ it took me ages to get a decent shot of one ~ I'd sit hidden away in the back of my Landi for hours. They are very shy and quite alert. This Saturday I spent at least a couple of hours waiting :) Thanks for your compliments and like ~ much appreciated. Good luck in your quest ~ you'll capture them sharp eventually ~ All the best ~ nick

Wonderful finch photos Nick. I especially like this one and it is also so wonderfully sharp. Regards Derek

Derek Geer ~ They are so small Derek that I have to get pretty close ~ within about three metres I'd guess, takes a lot of patience ~ so it is great to read your appreciative comments ~ Thank you ~ all the best ~ nick
