Went up there years ago with my brother-in-law. Canoed up from northern tip of Wahwashkesh Lake, via Cramadog Creek, I think it was called. You'll need a good map. Put in at the Government Dock--but be careful on Waswashkesh if it's a windy day. Took us a full day to get up the creek to Island Lake--lots of beaver dams to lug the canoe over. In a dry year, you may have to get out and muck upcreek with canoe on a rope. But it was a very interesting and beautiful trip. A part of the creek is fringed with something like bog/swamp sage--it smelled beautiful. It's a huge lake with virtually no human presence. The smallmouth were kind of tough to find, but pretty big. Lots of wind from the northwest when a cold front came through. Several more lakes are accessible if you push your way up the creeks that enter Island Lake's coves. No pike or walleye, they say, and sure enough, we caught only bass. Very pristine. You could spend years fishing it and not get to every good spot and great camping island. Good luck!
