I like all your VLA shots, Rich! It was sort of nice having them in the smallest configuration, wasn't it?

Greetings Rafal, Vivien and Eve, Thanks all for visiting the VLA and commenting.

Rafal - Thanks. Glad you like it.

Vivien - Real Sci-Fi stuff here, wonder if they will find anyone out there!!

Eve - Thanks for visiting. They must have moved the dishes recently. They were in the B configuration for us. Last time I was there they were in the D configuration. It was nice being able to take the tour that went inside the control room. Quite an operation in there. Unfortunately there were no clouds... :-(

Richard, is this a place where "Contact" with Jodie Foster was filmed?

Kind regards

Richard Ryer on April 9, 2008

Greetings Rafal Thanks for visiting and commenting. You have a very good eye. They did some filming for "Contact" in this location. That movie probably put this place on the map. It was really nice to be able to go into the control room and see how the dishes are aimed.

Rich this looks interesting. Reading your messages, what difference would clouds have made? Greetings, susan

Richard Ryer on June 11, 2009

Greetings Susan, Thanks for visiting and the great question. Sometimes huge expanses of blue sky are uninteresting and having clouds in there really add to the composition. Especially if you can get bright white clouds with shadows in them. In the case of this picture it was hazy from a lot of moisture in the air so the sky was kind of an odd color. Clouds would detract from that. Hope that helps you understand my thinking on this picture. Thanks so much for visiting.

Don't be too proud about this, Rich, we also have such arrays.  Well, it's a little bit adapted to our small country. ;-)
