Marcaurlio, the emperor philosoher, had been chosed by Hadrian himself as he was a youg boy, Licius Verus. His adoption by Antonin le Pieux was the condition that Hadrian demanded for the adoption of Antonin by himsel, and that what finaly happened. By this way Hadrian has made sure the futre of the Empire for 42 years after his own reign that lasted 22 years. Amitiés. Bernard
Sorry Bernard, there is a little mistake. Lucius Verus and Marc'Aurelio were adopted both from Antonino Pio, by order of Adriano, Lucius at the age of 4 year and Marc'Aurelio at the age of 17.
At Antoninus dead, both were elected co-imperators, teorically with the same powers.
In the reality, Marc'Aurelio was the real Emperor, but with the complete loialty and friendship of Lucius, that was the commander of the army.
Adriano was very far-sighted!

You are right, Stefano! I remember now what I've read before both in historical books and in the famous novel "Mémoires d'Hadrien" by Marguerite Yourcenar (1st woman elected at the Académie française).
Hadrian had great ambitions for the young Lucius Verus who died too early after a short reign because its live of depravation.

Je sais que M. Yourcenar a travaillé pendant près de trente ans à son grand ouvrage avant de le publier et d'obtenir le Goncourt, il me semble. Elle était forcément fascinée par la peronnalité complexe d'Hadrien qui reste à mes yeux un des plus grands empereurs en tous cas.
Je voyage aussi beaucoup par les livres et dans l'Histoire.
Arma Tu ne fais que me mettre l'eau à la bouche, j'avaid déjà vu beaucoup de photos de Tivoli et notamment de la Canopée. La dernière de Vicenzo est remarquable.
Je dois faire, en principe, un petit séjour à Rome grâce à un ami de Panoramio... En juin sans doute entre mes deux déménagements. Je n'ai pas autant d'heures de vol que Sarkozy, mais mieux vaut un emploi du temps bien rempli que la triste inactivité hivernale.
Pour commencer je vais étudier un peu plus sérieusement l'Italien qui n'est pas une langue aussi facile qu'il y paraît.
