It is said that the slate that for many years was quarried at Easedale and the nearby island of Belnahua was used worldwide. The slate quarries went 30m or so below sea level and ultimately all were breached by storms and the industry - the only industry about here - ceased. Fascinating place! Well worth a visit.
I learned to swim the hard way here - when I was about 7 or 8 we stayed in Easedale, and took the little ferry (a man in a boat with an outboard motor) to the island. All the rest of my family could swim, and were having a great time swimming in the flooded mine.
My dad told me it was time I learned to swim - and threw me in!

I learned to swim, very quickly!
