Gums trees or eucalypts but not Genus Eucalyptus. These grand trees are an Angophora species. Their leaves do not have the strong eucalyptus oil smell, the leaves are paired rather than alternate as for Eucalyptus spp, and their seed capsule is quite brittle. But in common parlance, they are gum trees (smooth bark) and eucalypts.
Only recently has there been a botanical reclassification of many of our trees. Significant numbers of species that were Eucalyptus now belong to a different genus!
