Il ficodindia appartiene al genere Opunzia (famiglia delle cactacee). Si presenta costituito da più fusti piatti chiamati pale che, insieme ai fiori e frutti tutti commestibili, sono un vero e proprio magazzino di sostanze nutritive. Il ficodindia contiene infatti una buona dose di minerali come il potassio, il magnesio, il calcio, il ferro insieme a vitamine dalle proprietà antiossidanti, come la vitamina A (sotto forma di betacarotene) e la vitamina C. Dispone inoltre di una varietà di amminoacidi (proteine di alta qualità) che insieme a minerali e vitamine ne fanno un alimento nutriente, ricco di fibre e con limitato contenuto di grassi. In estate maturano i frutti che variano, secondo la specie, per colore (verde, rosso o violaceo) e dimensioni (da 5 a 6 cm di lunghezza e da 2 a 3 cm di diametro). Hanno una forma simile a quella del kiwi e si vendono così come si raccolgono, nella loro buccia spinosa, o già sbucciati in vaschette sigillate. In primavera, dal corpo dei frutti nascono fiori di color giallo, arancione o rosa. Come le pale e i frutti, anche i petali dei fiori contengono sostanze attive ricche di proprietà curative, soprattutto flavonoidi. I fiori vengono raccolti, essiccati e venduti, sfusi o in bustine, sotto forma di capsule o di estratto liquido. Diverse sono le proprietà come rimedio antidiabetico... Alcune ricerche pubblicate su giornali specialistici hanno documentato l'efficacia dell'uso delle pale dell'Opunzia nel trattamento del diabete di tipo II. Per quanto riguarda gli effetti delle Opunzie sul metabolismo del colesterolo è stato provato che le fibre solubili (pectina) contenute soprattutto nel frutto, diminuiscono le concentrazioni di colesterolo. Se invece ci vogliamo affidare alla tradizione, esistono ricette che insegnano i principali usi del ficodindia a scopo curativo e non solo...anche in cucina il ficodindia viene utilizzato nella preparazione di marmellate, gelatine, bevande, dessert. In Sicilia, terra dove i fichidindia crescono spontaneamente, la polpa delle pale era tradizionalmente usata per riassorbire le contusioni, mentre i decotti avevano uno scopo diuretico ed erano impiegati per espellere i calcoli.
