THE FLAMINGO by Alexander Calder

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

This sculpture titled "Flamingo" is by Alexander Calder, one of the most eminent sculptors of the 20th century American art. Located in the Loop neighborhood of Chicago, it's brilliant color and graceful curves are a great contrast to the three black and blocky buildings surrounding it . All the three Federal buildings are designed by Mies Van Der Rohe. Alexander Calder has created many sculptures for open spaces throught the world and is most famous for inventing mobile sculptures ... also known as "kinetic art" ... However the Flamingo is an example of "stabile art". The "Flamingo" was installed in 1974.

Chicago is a city full of wonderful art.

Regarding the 1964-64 NY worlds fair, I think I know how old you are! I graduated from a high school about 3 miles east of the worlds fair in 1964. My friends and I just about lived at the fair. 18 was the legal drink age in '64 and we were all "legal". Every pavilion had a bar hidden in it, and we knew where they all were. I met my "ex" wife there! Terrible way to end this wonderful look back at the really good times.

By the way, LIKE-92 for you beautiful photo.

Warm regards, Glenn
