This image was taken late on an October afternoon. The original gibbet was put up in the 17th century. Only two bodies were strung up here. In 1676 a man and woman were hanged at Winchester for murder and their bodies brought to the gibbet where they were left dangling to deter others from committing the same crime. The gibbet has been replaced several times over the years.
