Actually, the name Canajoharie is Mohawk Indian (Iroquois Nation) for "the pot that washes itself". This structure is a caldera or pot-hole caused in times of high, fast water by stones whirling around a natural hole or depression and "scouring" it out ever deeper and deeper. This one was partially filled in at some point to make it less dangerous.

There is the possibility that the hole could have been filled in a bit in recent times. I believe the current maximum depth is roughly eight to ten feet.
