Humberstone

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

A former saltpeter refinery located in the Atacama desert, 40 km east of Iquique. Up to 3700 people used to work and live in this town at the peak of activity in the 30's. The works closed in 1960. In 1970 it was declared national monument and opened to tourism. In 2005 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Thank you FD. I was lucky to get this one selected for GE as they rejected 3 or 4 at the same time. A forum moderator explained that B&W or sepia photos of heritage sites are very often rejected because the reviewers are afraid they are not new photos and may violate some copyrights (postcards ...). I gave them a second try and cross fingers now.

This is very interesting and also somewhat frustrating info. I once posted a live and kicking classic australian house in sepia and it was rejected. Now I understand... I could post it again and next to it the coloured version. Could be a "joli" experiment.
