The Fairfax City Regional Library is part of the Fairfax County system even though the City of Fairfax is one of Virginia's independent cities and not part of a county. For a number of services the city and county share resources. This library has an extensive Virginia historical/genealogical collection housed in the Virginia Room on the third floor.

In winter 2007/2008 this building was closed and the library is housed in a new building nearby.
