April 26, 1981, one year after the military take-over by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe on April 12, 1980. Doe disemboweled President Tolbert in his bed while he slept. Thirteen ministers were publicly executed 10 days later on this beach.
It seems that the execution took place on the beach just behind Barclay "training center" (Army barracks), about 2 miles further.
Thanks for this information franek2. Given the amount of your photo in Monrovia, you certainly are more informed than me.
what brought you to this place ?
a plane ;-)
I was working for a French firm that wanted to be represented in as many countries as possible. For this reason I went to unlikely places for business like this and others, but very interesting from the point of view of singularity. ;-)
thanks for quick answer to both of you
My answer was a joke... for me as well, my job brought me there. And Monrovia looked safer than many other cities in the world. Only some areas have to be avoided.. just like this West Point slum.
I took my pics of West Point Beach from the remains of Ducor Hotel, at the top of the hill.
The other picture of West Point Beach was taken from Ducor Hotel. This one, instead, was taken from the foot of the hill.
To Pivapao: you are right, but currently the West Point area is not recommanded to foreigners... What's why this pic was taken from far away...
