This is a ruined castle barely visible from the village of Wigmore in Herefordshire. It was founded after the Norman Conquest probable c.1070 by William fitzOsbern. By 1425 it was said to have been derelict but archaeological excavations suggests building work was carried out there in the mid-15th century. In the 16th century it was used partly as a prison although it was beginning to decay again. After the Civil War the castle was left in a state of ruin and today it is under the guardianship of English Heritage.
