Powis Castle (Welsh Castell Powis) is a medieval castle, fortress and grand country mansion situated near the town of Welshpool. The residence of the Earl of Powis the castle is known for its attractive formal gardens, terraces, parkland, deerpark and landscaped estate. The castle was closed on our visit but the gardens were well worth the visit and we only came across it by chance after driving through Welshpool on our way back to our Shropshire holiday lodge from Shrewsbury! Unlike other castles which were built by the English to subdue the Welsh, Powis was the fortress of a dynasty of Welsh princes. In 1644 the castle was captured by Parliamentary troops and not returned to the owners, the Herbert family, until the restoration of Charles 2nd. It is now in the care of the National Trust and well worth a visit.
