This cultural offering is not neccessarily Buddhist. It reflects the trditional, pre-Buddhist pantheistic culture of the Vietnamese. The offering is to the local environment and household gods and to the (offerers') ancestors. It's found usually under the fig tree and that's maybe why many poeple thought it's Buddhist in origin. Many Vietnamese are superstitious about the fig tree, thinking it's the gathering/haunting place for ghosts and souls of their ancestors.
