Located 15 km downstream of Orléans in the Loire river valley, the large Basilique of Cléry Saint André was rebuilt with the help of the king Louis the 11th in the 2nd half of the 15th century. This king loved this place so much that he is buried inside the Basilique. King Philip the 1st, who is buried in the abbey of St Benoît sur Loire, also in the Orleans region, and king Louis the 11th are the only 2 kings of France not being buried in the Royal Necropolis of the Basilique of Saint-Denis, located North of Paris. In consequence, their final resting place was not desecrated during the French Revolution. You can still find the skull of Louis the 11th in a small crypt under this Basilique of Cléry. Clery is located 5 kilometers from the river, opposite to Meung sur Loire, where stands the old castle of the bishops of Orléans.
