Hello Michael and a big welcome.
The people who occupy these harbour-side houses enjoy a fabulous view over the old fishing town.
I am so glad that you enjoyed this scene and feel honoured that you have chosen to save this photo to your favourites. Thankyou.

Hi, Jim. I love the light on this picture. Is there a best time of day to get good light? Or does it depend on the camera? Paula

Jim, this one's tagged as a competition photo, but there's no place for me to vote on it. Did you forget to add it to the competition? I'd really like to give it my vote!
Please take a look at THIS PICTURE and let me know what you think. It's one of my brother-in-law's first attempts in Panoramio.
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul, clearly something is not working in Panoramio. I submitted 7 photos but none of them have turned up in the contestants pages. Unfortunately I have no way to re-submit them.

Dear Jim,
I have enjoyed your artistic skill with the camera, and been also delighted with your portrayal of Whitby and surrounds. The element of the familiar is also something that draws me to your album. As you know, I have been to Whitby intentionally for it was a place of significance for my wife's family. As you continue uploading Whitby, I'll enjoy them all for the combined reasons of quality and significance.
As for this image, the first thoughts that came to me were that it was like arriving home and seeing my wife's car is already in the garage, or coming in from the cold and smelling a lamb roast in the oven! How many fishermen have come into this harbour and on seeing this bank of houses warmed to the sense of being home again, safe in the arms of a familiar haven.

Hello once more Ian and welcome.
May I say first and foremost that I feel overwhelmed by your generous comments. Like I have said before, I hope that my modest attempts to post interesting photos with relevant descriptions tinged with a little humour relating to my hometown and its people, will find a wider audience. This is surely the rason' detre .
Your appreciation for my humble attempts at photography is inspiration indeed. I am totally surprised by the reaction of so many excellent photographers. I guess that you too share similar feelings.
I could not have imagined the feelings of joy and sometimes disapointment, even sadness that a single photo can evoke in the innermost thoughts of the human mind.
It is comforting for me to know that such feelings of homeliness, warmth and a sense of wellbeing are created in the mind of the beholder. So I thankyou for relating your personal thoughts so openly. It is a great gift you have Ian to be able to transfer your thoughts to paper so eloquently.
I wish that others here could understand that there is so much more to a picture than the way it looks.
As always Ian, It is truly a great pleasure to share these sentiments with you.
warmest wishes.

Hi Jim,
Been away for a few days and just catching up on you guys. This is another beautiful study of Whitby, another side but no less fascinating.
Are you getting much fishing in?
Best regards,
Sean
AXOTA, on May 19, 2008, said:
Greetings and welcome back Sean. The fishing season is uderway and I am rushing to re-launch my boat following its annual re-fit. Its a busy time for me (a labour of love you might say) I am in my element when there is work to be done on the old dear. I live a solitary life and home chores get put on the back-burner. This means rushed or no meals, mountains of washing up, accumulations of dust, heaps of ironing, unread mail, unpaid bills. The list is endless. It's a case of first priority being the boat. As she is almost 50 years old, I feel it my duty to lavish the old girl wiyh lots of TLC.
Fish are a little scarce just now but things will improve next week, weather permitting.
I appreciate your nice comments and visit Sean.

Wonderful shot Jim! As it does, Panoramio has provided a venue for art, science, philosophy and love all on your one image! I don't have Ian's ability, nor for that matter can I type. But I do appreciate the finer things in life which you are sharing with us.
Do you have any pictures of your beloved vessel posted? I would enjoy seeing her.

Greetings and a warm welcome TRingold
Dear Tom, first of all, thankyou for all your praise and thoughtful words.
This ancient harbour is worthy of the descriptitive term 'Haven', for those are my feelings too. The two massive stone Piers that form the entrance to the old Port, can be likened to the welcoming arms of a dear friend. When I return home from the sea, these familiar features, the fishermens cottages, fish quays, harbourside Inns and churches of great antiquity fill me with a feeling of wellbeing and a great appreciation of my fellow men (and women) and the joy to be alive.
I own a very modest boat, she is about 45 years of age, very safe and sea-worthy. Excellent fishing platform and will exceed 25 Knts. I enclose a link for your perusal. HERE
Thankyou for taking the time to stay a while.

AXOTA, on June 23, 2008, said:
What I realy love about these harbour houses Pali is the way that they thrust upwards to gain elevation over the houses in front.
Like spectators in a crowd on their tiptoes, each row of streets compete for the fabulous harbour views.
This is one of my favourite photos, the light from the west enhances the scene, and adds clarity to the image.
Cheers Pali
