'And lying over it are mountains with wonderful cliffs leaving a narrow corridor near the sea. It is inhabited by the Ligures who live mainly on flocks, milk and a beverage made of barley; they pasture their flocks in the lands near the sea but mostly in the mountains. There they have ship-building timber in great quanitities with trees so large that the diameter of some of them is eight feet. And many of these varieties are no less suitable for table making than the thyine wood. These then bring down in the emporion in Genoa as well as flock, hides and honey and carry in return loads of olive oil and Italian wine. The little wine that they produce is mixed with resin (retsina) and is harsh. And from here come the so-called "ginnoi", horses and mules, the Ligurian tunics and "sagi". And amber is there in excess, which some name electron. And, although, in their military marches they are not at all good horseback riders, they excell as hoplites and slingers. Because of their bronze shields, some manifest that they are Greeks.' From Strabo's Geography. Book 4:6(2).
