What we are looking at is the Gatun Dam and Gatun Locks, looking north. At the bottom right is the north end of Navy Island. Below the dam is the Chagres River and a portion of the French canal, part of which can also be seen to the right and north of the dam, which looks like it disappears into dense jungle but curves slightly and joins the canal about where the ships are in the channel north of the locks. I grew up in Gatun, my Dad worked on the locks for 30 years. It was my home for 18 years and it was a beautiful place to grow up in. Pictures like this make me want to cry for love of a lost paradise.
