Hi. I live in Wellawaya - there has been much improvement in the time I have been here (7 years) and especially so in the last 2 years. On your next visit you will see big changes - new roads, sidewalks, conference hall, market, bus terminal (stand). Everyone has a mobile phone. Your depiction of rural Sri Lanka is of a former time.
The Kataragama temple is about an hour (65 km) drive from Forests for People Tanamalwila. Before the Wild Life dept declared the forests between Tanamalwila and Kataragama a wild life sanctuary it was possible to walk through the jungle to Kataragama (about 22 km). These days you can have a safari from gate to gate.
Under the community water protection program the Bogaha wewa was the fist wewa (reservoir) to be built by Forests for People in the early 1990. It was sponsored and technical expertise by the Technical University of the Netherlands (DUT).
