The rail in the foreground is what remains of the original line that continued over to the terminus at Angeles Camp. The line made a series of switchbacks down into the Stanislaus River canyon and back up. The old timers called the trains, the "Tri-daily's" as the trains would leave Angels Camp in the morning and "try daily" to make it back in the evenings. Quote acknowledged to Bert Raggio, of Angels Camp.
