That was exactly my plan! I made it to the top of the mountain where the ants were swarming (they think nothing of flying into your eyes and ears), got sunburnt and ran out of water coming back down. Quite a day. No rattlesnakes at least.

I ran out of daylight, almost out of fuel, and was hoping that Death Valley would be warmest place I would find to sleep in my car. By 3am I got fed up of shivering and hit the road again! It wasn't warm but it was beautiful in twilight.

At the right in the photo is Cookes Peak looking to the west. The canyon at the foot (left) of the mountain was a route for the Butterfield Stage line. The Apaches did their best at thwarting to no avail, unfortunately.
