Well, during my BA I was studying Politics and Russian. When it came time to choose a dissertation, I wanted to combine the two and somehow ended up on Birobidjan. Partly I was fascinated with Soviet nationalities policy and partyly I just wanted to do something different. I actually stayed in Khabarovsk and was there four days, and I day-tripped to Birobidjan. What I remember was simply trying to find the Jewishness of a place that seemed Jewish mostly in name.
