By far the best picture of the mouth of the River Wansbeck I have ever seen. My Great Grandfather Wheatley had a small ferry to carry folk across the river from Cambois on the right in the late 19th/early 20th Centuries.
Not coal staiths, but the remains of the old 'Lloyds Hailing Station' Jetty. The old hailing station was demolished in the 1960's when a tow rope from a tug to a large cargo vessel snapped, and it collided with the jetty. The station crew had less than a minute to get off the jetty before the cargo vessel struck. I saw the whole incident from where I was fishing about 200 yards upstream.
