Fantastic picture. Was the home of G. Henry Whitcomb built circa 1890, he owned an envelope factory, after his death 1916, the property was given to the city of Worcester and became a home for the blind in 1917. The home was the first graney home built in the city.

Remember the tv antenna on all roofs, some high cost models rotated (Channel Master was a big name in top cost tv gear).

Will always remember the "CHRISTMAS BELLS OF WPI" they played for the Christmas month and rang about 5PM to 8PM. The bells could be heard clearly at Elm Park. Are they still a Christmas thing in the neighborhood?

Thanks for the picture of our old neighborhood

Wow, "macbravo" didn't know that. But remember swinging out the old clothes line from a back poarch. It dry clothes in half a day and sing it in and out. In winter the clothes came in frozen, real frozen, and they had to be dried in the house.

WPI ia a super engineering school, was and is one of tops in the world. It's first name was "Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science", that goes back to the 1860's. And had free education for students in Worcester county, others students had to pay. All students worked at the schools shop making things sold and thus free education. The Shops built things, real hands on things, had a foundry and machine shop, hi-teck in the 1880's.

Remember the beach with lots of people in the 1960's believe it was a shared beach with Norton's. Correct me if i'm wrong. I worked at heald Machine Company 1964 to 1969 neeed a pass to get into work and also go to the beach.

Very nice picture, the building sure has changed.

Prior to the branch libraries system the reading public of Worcester could have books delivered to about 17 depots (corner stores or major employers) a book of their choice. Over-due charge 2 cents, when phones came in you could re-new over the phone. Life then was much influinced by the written word, today its the spin of the spoken word.

Reading is important, I remember will the painfull of being laughed at as a slow reader in Classical High School (having dislectia before it had a name).

Libraries don't laugh but provide a place to learn and read at your pace.
