In Gisborne this statue is known as the "Crook Cook". It was gifted to the city in 1969 as part of the Cook Bi-centennial celebrations. (200 years after Cook discovered NZ). The uniform has generally be suggested a being more Italianate rather than British. The wording under the statue explains the error that was made and was recently added - c2005.
