Wonderful picture! It was ten years ago that I spend most of a day and part of a night in this spot with a broken down car and some wonderful friends!
We planned to hit the beach, the five of us, didn't want to take another car so we could all be together! Packed three wide in the back, driver and navigator in the front with a trunk full of everything we could need for a day at the beach we were coasting South on Hwy 1 when, Bang... Engine was running, tires were still rolling, couldn't do anything but coast. Almost to a stop I don't think I even used the brakes when we arrived at this wide spot in the road. I crawled under the car and couldn't find anything obviously wrong, scratching my head as the back seat stretched their legs, "lets go to the beach" was the common chant. Unpacking a few things we walked the path stopping to enjoy a refreshments with the three amigos we spent a few hours exploring this untouched strecth of coastline, we were alone except for the shells and magical sea life washed up on the shore. We returned to the scene of my 1971 Torino's home for the next 12 hours to come up with a plan. We used the call box across the street and were not sure if the message got through to Herb, our hero of the day. Two hours later he appears with a vehicle barley large enough for the five of us in the first place let alone himself and his passanger!
I'll speed this up a little...
We drive the hour back home. Get a Bronco and a parents minivan and a car dolly. We try to push the car up on the dolly and we can't get it up all the way so we try again, and again. Some hikers show up from their walk on the peaceful beach and help us push. They must have been the strongest women I have ever met because the front tires went up the ramps, into the little indents and kept on going over the edge. Now we have a high centered Torino that weighs 4,000 lbs and a girlfriend who has to get back home to go to work. We all drive back home, trade the Bronco for a girlfriends pickup and grab some floor jacks, blocks of wood and more beer. We took more beer on the first return trip too...
Finally we figured that we could jack up the dolly with the car on it, remove the dolly tire and place it under the tire of the Torino. We did this on both sides and when we lowered the dolly to the ground because the tires were a little higher we could push it back onto solid ground. Put the wheels back on the trailer.
Now we get the Torino back on the dolly correctly this time and get ready to pull the pickup around to hook up to the dolly. We try to put the stinger into the receiver and what do you know there was a lock in the receiver... The girlfriend had the key and we were using the spares which didn't have the key for the lock...
We wait, finally the girlfriend gets off work and cruises at warp 9 over the mountain to deliver our key so we can get on the road.
There is more to the story where a guy on a motorcycle falls into a ditch after roasting a hot dog on our fire and just before we warn him it's there. The country sheriff who warned us to keep the fire we had going in the smokey joe down so the rangers wouldn't give us grief. The Mushroom factory... And I'm sure there was more...
Thank you for the picture of this exact location where so many memories of mine are from.
Oh, and it was a broken flexplate that left us stranded there in the first place, but that is a different story!
