Située au cœur de la Champagne berrichonne, Issoudun est une cité ancienne dont le nom celte était « Exoldunum ». Capitale du Bas-Berry, ville royale dès 1240, elle doit alors sa prospérité à l’importance de ses foires et marchés ainsi qu’à la qualité de son artisanat et de sa vigne. Héritière d’une longue tradition hospitalière (hospice Saint-Roch, pèlerinage), elle s’est également singularisée tout au long de son histoire par son esprit d’indépendance et sa fierté. La cité médiévale fortifiée a profondément marqué le plan de la Ville, qui révèle aux curieux une grande richesse architecturale. Au fil des siècles, elle a vu défiler de nombreux personnages marquants, et la chronique locale déroule une belle histoire, ponctuée d’anecdotes pittoresques. Balzac y trouva l’inspiration d’un de ses romans les plus truculents : « La Rabouilleuse ». C’est aujourd’hui une ville dynamique de 14.000 habitants, qui a su valoriser son patrimoine naturel et historique, pour ouvrir des perspectives vers l’avenir. Elle développe tout un panel de formations, dans le domaine de la culture.

Issoudun – known as Exoldunum in Celtic – is an ancient city at the heart of the Berry area of Champagne. The capital of Bas-Berry and a royal city from 1250, it owes its prosperity to the importance of its fairs and markets and the quality of its crafts and vines. Heir to a long charitable tradition (Saint Roch Hospice, pilgrimage), Issoudun’s independent spirit and pride have also been distinguishing features throughout its history. The mediaeval fortified city has made deep impression on the town layout and visitors will delight in its exceptionally fine architecture. The town has enjoyed visits from succession of influential personalities over the centuries and local records unfold a fascinating history interspersed with charming anecdotes. Balzac found inspiration in Issoudun for one of his most down-to-earth novels, La Rabouilleuse (The Black Sheep). Issoudun today is a buoyant town with a population of 14,000, a town that has known how to make the most of its natural and historical héritage with an eye on future expansion. It is developing a wide range of training courses in cultural areas.

Dans un parcours architectural qui mène d'une chapelle du XIIe siècle aux salles d'expositions contemporaines, ce musée embrasse l'histoire de la cité, aborde les continents lointains (Afrique, Océanie) et expose des artistes contemporains de renom.

In an architectural journey from a 12th century chapel to modern exhibition rooms, this museum embraces the town's history, touches on far-flung continents (Africa and Oceania) and stages exhibitions of renowned contemporary artists.

Depuis le XIIe siècle, la Tour Blanche domine la ville de sa silhouette élancée. Ouverte au public depuis l'an 2000 entre avril et septembre, ce bel édifice évoque le Moyen Age de Richard Coeur de Lion, Philippe Auguste et Blanche de Castille. De son sommet, on découvre un panorama imprenable sur la ville et ses alentours.

The soaring profile of the White Tower has dominated the town since the 12th century. This fine building, open since 2000 from April to September, conjures up the Middle Ages of Richard the Lionheart, Philippe Auguste and Blanche of Castile. Climb to the top for an unobstructed view over the town and its surroundings.
