This bridge was completed in 1936 and was built to complete road access to the Whanganui River for settlers who returned from the 1st World War. The conditions were very difficult through the World Slump in the 1930's resulting in the abandonment of all the properties, not long after the 2nd World War. The valley and the road were officially closed in 1950 with the whole area being included in the Whanganui National Park. The Bridge then became the icon of that park. The Bridge was built by Sandford & Brown of Raetihi.
