Edfu. Temple of Horus, cult chamber behind the sanctuary containing a modern reconstruction of an ancient portable bark-shrine sitting on a bark pedestal. The shrine was in the shape of an ancient Egyptian boat (i.e., bark). In the central cabin was placed the statue of the god Horus. The shrine, with its long carrying poles, was carried on the shoulders of the Egyptian priests in procession. Such Egyptian portable bark-shrines, which housed the presence of a god, were the direct archetype (and almost certainly the inspiration) of the later Hebrew Ark of the Covenant from the Holy Bible.
