In May, during Apex's Peak Day Festival (essentially a founder's day celebration), all of these doors are open, the trucks are moved out, and the fire department makes and serves hundreds of pancakes as part of their fundraiser.

This shot is toward the southwest. The steeple in the distance is atop Apex Baptist Church, established in 1873, the same year that Apex was incorporated. The shops along Salem Street (the main street) sport a bakery, an old-fashioned soda shop, a professional photographer, a gym, an art/framing studio, a couple of restaurants, and an antique store, among others. This block is the epicenter of all of Apex's parades and festivals.

This shot is looking due north at the back side of the downtown shops. The grey building in the distance is the old firestation (now called FireStation #1. The tracks are part of the CSX railroad, called the Seaboard Coastline.

But the real significance of this picture is that this Chatham Street crossing is the highest point along the entire Seaboard Coastline, thus the town's name - "Apex".

I've been in that house! It is very long. It is really neat, too.
