Looking downstream in the Austin Creek Canyon within the core serpentine soils Sargeant Cypress dominant forest. In the image lower right is a specimen of the rare Arctostaphylos Bakeri sublaevis. The view is looking into the main canyon at The Cedars, the headwaters of Austin Creek above Cazadero.
This view of the rugged coastline of Stewart Island illustrates the canopy cover extending virtually to the mean high tideline. The forest provides habitat for a wide diversity of understory shrub, fern and herbaceous flora as well as considerable birdlife.
This coastal grassland and forest provides breeding habitat for the Yellow-eyed Penguin and Little Blue Penguin. Active reforestation work is ongoing to improve the habitat which has been overgrazed and somewhat deforested over the last millennium.
