I'm not proficient in the architecture but you are right. There are no bricks in the old buildings. The bricks were too expensive during these times and they had to use the local resources.
But they invented very interesting replacemnt of roman style bricks in the walls. Every 2-3 lines of big stones are folowed by 2-3 lines of small stones. The final result is amazing. You still can see it in some non renovated houses.

Thanks for the photograph P.Matanski. I suspect there are significant number of new developments on the Island. Instead of white colouring of the exteriors they seem to prefer blues and yellows at least in this photograph; this is something need to be carefully examined in order to preserve the character of the architecture in the Island. What do you think?
