The first time I saw this view was in 1963 or '64. I believe I was 7 or 8 years old. At that time there was a swinging cable bridge that crossed the river. The second time was I think also in 1964. The swinging bridge was there but packed with people all the way across. There was some sort of festival taking place on the island. I had wandered ahead of my Dad and little brother. I was in the middle of the crowded bridge when I heard my Dad call me. They were still on land. He told me to get off the bridge NOW!.He said the bridge was going to break. No sooner than I had one foot off the bridge itdid break. I turned to see and saw 20 or more people washing down the river twords the falls. Some swiming, others clinging to pieces of the broken bridge. Others were holding on to the pieces of the bridge that were still attached to the bank. Others that could were climbing up the steep sides bloody and broken. The third and last time I was a few years later. This bridge had replaced the swinging bridge. Although tis tradgedy is still fresh in my mind at 50 years old, I also think of this place as one of the most beautiful and powerfull memories of my life. Thanks for youre site and allowing me to share.
